Parable of the Sower is a dystopian story set in a near-future California grappling with climate change, economic collapse, and extreme social inequality. The protagonist, Lauren Olamina, is a young Black woman who, despite suffering from hyperempathy (a condition that makes her feel others’ pain), must escape her destroyed home and lead a community of survivors, creating a new faith called Earthseed centered on the belief that “God Is Change”.
